Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education Intervention
Get the Details on How to Become an Interventionist
The online M.Ed. in Intervention provides you with the education and credentials needed to identify children who may need additional help in the classroom and deliver interventions in math, literacy or behavior. Whether you want to coordinate or deliver evidence-based support, the degree prepares you to build, lead or implement services for Response To Intervention (RTI) or Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) programs at a student’s level of learning with minimal disruption.
This program is offered online, allowing you to learn where and when it’s convenient for you while implementing concepts immediately to your current classroom.
The Curriculum Supports Multiple Cognates
Evidence-supported interventions are offered in behavior, math and literacy. You will receive a comprehensive education in each of them —— but you will select a focus area for your capstone project. You will graduate with an education in all three areas, but have more experience in your chosen subject.
Other course topics include:
- Educational Research
- Advanced Educational Psychology
- Positive Behavior Intervention and Support
- Issues and Trends in Special Education
A Special Curriculum Note: The M.Ed. in Intervention is housed in the Special Education Program at Winthrop because the assignments are developed to specifically address National Board Professional Teaching Standards; however, it is not exclusively a master’s in Special Education program and does not lead to specific licensure.
The Growing Need for Classroom Interventionists and Professional Coaches
Recent education legislation calls for teachers to provide research-based interventions before children are designated for a special education track. Many educational organizations, from individual schools through state departments of education, decided to implement these interventions through a system called Response to Intervention (RTI), also referred to as a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS). As a result, interventionists are needed in the classroom, as professional coaches and as a designated position within school systems to ensure compliance and help children.
The online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education Intervention is designed for licensed teachers whose goal is to become an interventionist or instructional coach.
